Iowa Legislators Want Public Financing

Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Mon, 01/08/2007 - 22:25

Two Iowa lawmakers want to do something about the special interest money flooding into the state's elections: introduce public financing legislation to put power back in the hands of the voters, where it belongs. State Rep. Pam Jochum (D) is spearheading the effort in the State House, while Mike Connelly (D) is heading up the drive in the State Senate. Both feel the influence of wealthy donors and special interest money is out of control, while public financing would, at a very low cost to citizens, reduce that influence while allowing legislators to go back to work for the people without having to worry about courting the favor of wealthy interests. As Connelly says, "The average citizen oftentimes has no one to really lobby for their efforts."
