New Ideas for New Mexico

Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Thu, 11/30/2006 - 21:07

Members of New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson's ethics reform task force held a forum yesteday to talk about their reccomendations to bring New Mexico level with, and then ahead of, other states in implementing sound ethics policy. A principle plank of this reform is expanding the public financing program which currently exists for Albuquerque's elections, and for the state's Public Regulation Commission. In response to the recommendations of the task force, which were issued in writing last month, Governor Richardson voiced his support for change: ""I believe the task force has drafted a very strong set of recommendations, particularly in regard to limits on gifts and campaign contributions. The time has come to pass fair and practical legislation that sets clear boundaries and penalties that apply to the legislative and executive branches of government. We must rebuild the public trust in our system."
