From Russia With...Well, Concern

Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Fri, 11/03/2006 - 16:04

Cool! The St. Peterburg Times, an English-language newspaper in St. Petersburg, Russia is running an editorial on how to break the chokehold of incumbency in the US Congress - one of the many reforms they discuss is giving candidates access to public financing as part of a larger effort to make media airtime more accessible.  The editorial suggests that if the US wishes to present itself as a model of democracy in the world, it should take a look at the unshakeable power of incumbency, the factors that contribute to it, and the low voter turnout in response to this "unholy trinity of money, media and politics" and work to bring a greater degree of vitality back to the process.
