New Mexico Task Force Recommends Public Financing

Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Mon, 09/25/2006 - 20:14

Last year Albuquerque, New Mexico passed a municipal public financing law on the ballot, now the task force appointed by Governor Bill Richardson to look at ethics reforms for the state of New Mexico has issued a series of policy recommendations, including full public financing of elections. Task force member Stuart Udall led the charge for the public financing recommendation, and is quoted in the Los Alamos Times article on his wishs to see the proposal adopted: "I'd like to see New Mexico step out front in heading the nation down a new path."  Looks like the report will head to Governor Richardson in October, so we'll keep an eye on this and see if this "cautious" efforts leads to meaningful commitment to reform.
