Making Time for Money
Lisa Mascaro of the Las Vegas Sun considers the the immense amount of time lawmakers must devote to fundraising for re-election, even as they try to make time to do the job they were elected to do: represent their constituents. Citing Nick Nyhart, our executive director, among others she looks at various reforms designed to eliminate this perpetual money chase. One of the major advantages publicly financed candidates frequently cite to the Clean Elections model is the elimination of this very money chase - leaving more time to talk to constituents abouthe issues on the table. It's shocking the amount of time elected officials must spend just plumping their war chests for re-election - even those running unopposed, or in "safe" districts - if you're interested in learning more about a project to document the time our members of Congress spend on their various tasks (including fundraising) you might take a look at this project put together by the Sunlight Foundation.
