San Jose Commission Considers Public Financing

Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Tue, 08/15/2006 - 14:55

San Jose's Election Commission is taking a serious look at implementing a public financing option for its elections.  Mayor Ron Gonzales first suggested a public financing alternative in March of this year to halt the money chase dominating local elections.  The article in The Mercury News lays out the various issues the Commission is considering, including the successful Clean Elections-style systems in place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Portland, Oregon, Maine, and Arizona.  California is seeing a lot of public financing activity lately with Los Angeles also taking a look at the system and Californias set to vote on Proposition 89 in November.
