Granny D in AZ
Go Granny D!
Doris "Granny D" Haddock, the 96 year-old woman who walked across the United States in support of campaign finance reform is in Phoenix today to oppose the repeal of Arizona's Clean Elections system. This morning, Granny D. was scheduled to deliver letters to members of the Arizona Legislature announcing that she will walk through the districts of those running for reelection this year who support the repeal of the reform program. She says she hopes that by walking through their districts she will create "a useful conversation between voters and the anti-reform incumbents."
Here is the text of Granny D's letter:

Dear Members of the Arizona Legislature:
I truly believe that the many young men and women who died for our nation and for our freedom in all of its wars did not die for a government of, by and for the special interests.
Some of you seem to disagree.
Arizona and Maine voters have led the way in chasing the moneychangers out of our temples of democracy, and moving our politics back to a contest of ideas and not pocketbooks. With the Abramoff scandal still unraveling in Washington, it is clear that we need the Clean Elections system now more than ever. Arizona, already having that reform, certainly does not need to repeal it.
Any Members of the Arizona Legislature who do not understand these things need a good talking to--not from me, but from their own constituents who perhaps better understand the sacrifices Americans have made for our government of, by and for our people. I will therefore walk across the district of any Arizona Legislator up for reelection this year who supports the repeal of the Clean Elections system.
I will do so to talk to the people and the press of that district and its towns, so that the voters in the primary or general election might be motivated to have a good discussion with their legislators on this issue.
I walked across the United States at the age of 90 to support Senator McCain's campaign finance reform bill. You may think that I don't have the miles left in me to do you any damage.
A lot of politicians have lost that bet. A lot of politicians don't quite get how fed-up voters are with special-interest-funded politics and politicians.
Sincerely,
Doris "Granny D" Haddock
