Unfortunately, Proposition 89, California's Clean Elections initiative, was defeated last night. Thanks goes out to all who worked to give the state a chance at Clean Elections. It was a hard fought battle - and not the end of our fight for public financing and fair elections in California.

La Opinión, the country’s largest Spanish-language daily newspaper, has endorsed Proposition 89, the California Clean Money and Fair Elections initiative. Citing voter disenfranchisement as a result of the special interest money’s dominance in political campaigns, the paper feels Prop 89 is an essential reform to restore faith in our electoral system and our government.

Election season: a time for careful and nuanced debate about the issues of the day and how they'll honestly affect vot--oh, sorry. Must have hit my head on something. No, as Virginia Ellis and Dan Morian explain in an article on the raging campaign spending in California, the battle on November 7th is all about the money.
