Interview with Hawaii Rep. Della Au Belatti
Earlier this month, the Hawaii House passed HB 1481, a bill that would create a small donor public financing system for state legislative races. The bill passed through the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday. As the lead sponsor of the bill, Hawaii State Rep. Della Au Belatti (D) has been working hard to get it to the governor's desk.

Cuomo to Activists: Fair Elections “one of the most important issues to complete”
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo spoke on a telephone town hall last night with about 1,350 grassroots activists, signaling his strong support for campaign finance reform, saying "Campaign finance is a way to tell the people of this state and this country: It's your government. You own it. Literally." The Governor called campaign finance reform “one of the most important issues to complete” in the rest of New York’s legislative session this year.

Justice Scalia was really being Justice Scalia yesterday at oral arguments for the challenge to Section 5: he called it "perpetuation of a racial entitlement" that Congress would never overturn because the name of the bill sounded nice. Sotomayor fired back to the lawyer: "Do you think the right to vote is a racial entitlement in Section 5?"

This morning Fair Elections supporter Cecilia Tkaczyk officially became the newest state senator in New York, after all the votes were finally counted. Cecilia Tkaczyk's victory is a major boost to the campaign for publicly financed Fair Elections in New York.

PRESS RELEASE: New York Gov. Cuomo Calls For New York City-style Public Financing Of Elections For State
In his State of the State address today, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo pledged his support for the legislature to pass publicly financed Fair Elections legislation to curb the influence of big money in New York politics.
Cuomo in his SoS: "...we need to implement a public finance system like in New York City. It works well there, and it will work well for the state too.“

Senate Will See At Least Six New Reform Champions in 2013
People disgusted by the big money that flooded this year’s elections should take heart with the knowledge that the U.S. Senate will see at least six new champions for fixing our broken campaign finance system.
Four U.S. House members who have advocated reform measures like the Fair Elections Now Act in the lower chamber will replace Senators who have been absent or inactive on the issue and two challengers will replace Republicans who refused to support public financing legislation.
