Cleaning up California

Submitted by Monica Rober on Fri, 08/15/2008 - 18:24

Calling all State legislators: California, it's time to get Clean!   Over the years, California has seen its fair share of shady situations. And now thanks to the work of California Clean Money Campaign and countless activists, the push for public financing is gaining traction and Clean Elections in California is a step closer to becoming reality.   AB 583, which was introduced by Assemblywoman Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley), provides for a Clean Money and Fair Elections Pilot Program in the race for Secretary of State. If passed, the program would be first implemented in the 2010 elections.   This editorial from the San Francisco Chronicle endorsing the legislation, hits the nail on the head, highlighting how easy it is for legislators to misplace their priorities in a pay-to-play system:   "We... know what happens when politicians are forced to raise millions of dollars to compete for a seat in the Legislature, or tens of millions to compete for a statewide office. They spend far more time dialing for dollars than they do talking to voters."   The editorial goes on to laud the Clean Elections model and Assemblywoman Hancock's steadfastness through this long process. However, Hancock is not the only one deserving of praise, California Clean Money (www.caclean.org) has worked tirelessly for the last six years to pass a Clean Elections law. Many dedicated individuals are finally seeing the fruits of their labor - and are ready for a healthy bite and a breath of fresh air.
